‘Travelling – It leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller’
Its not often that I’m left speechless but the sheer beauty of this cathedral is capable of that reaction. Of all of the tourist attractions and historical landmarks that you can visit in Milan make sure that the Duomo Di Milano is at the top of your list.
Located in the centre of the city it is easy to get to and the walk is rather pleasant as well. There are three different payment options:
Entry to the cathedral – €2
Access to the rooftop terrace (via stairs) and cathedral – €11
Access to the rooftop terrace (via lift) and cathedral – €13
We decided to take option two and it was well worth the climb, even if I looked like I was dying at the top. Personally I am scared of heights but trust me when I say challenge yourself and go up to take a look. The jelly legs are totally worth the breath-taking view. There are two levels to the terrace and once you are at the highest point you can get a 360º view of the city and the pictures you will take shall be incredible.
Once you are inside the cathedral you shall be greeted with a whole different kind of beauty that is impossible to describe but also impossible to forget. I should let you all know now that I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan and so this may also be one of the reasons why I love this cathedral so much. Once you step inside you are greeted by towering columns that are all throughput the cathedral. This reminded me of a scene from the fellowship of the ring where the fellowship are in the Mountains of Moria and running towards the bridge and away from the orcs. You are also able to get up close to a replica of the Madonnina statue that is at the top of the cathedral.
***FACT: no building in Milan is taller than the Madonnina statue.
Whilst you are in the area of the cathedral you shall notice a huge archway which is beautiful in itself but go inside and it gets even better. As I mentioned in my previous post Milan is known for its shopping, well through the arch is home to the biggest names including Prada, Louis Vuitton and Armani. Also take the time to stand in the centre of the building and just look up, you will become speechless from the beauty, colours and architecture that the building possesses.
One last thing, go and pick a random restaurant and sit outside for lunch…there is nothing better than to people watch in a different country.
